MIL JV Football: LAHAINALUNA 27, MAUI HIGH 0 - September 16, 2011

After a one week hiatus and a bitter loss to Baldwin in which they blew a double digit lead in the 4th quarter, the Lunas' JV squad redeemed themselves with a 27-0 win over Maui High.

The JV Lunas took the field with a new look - the varsity's uniforms! For a while there, I thought I had missed the JV game when I saw them warming up. When I saw the number of players, I realized this was the JV.

The Lunas established themselves on the first play of the game, as #35 Ansen Cabanilla almost took the opening kickoff to the house for a touchdown. The Lunas left no doubt as to who would win this game as they raced out to a 21 point lead in the first quarter, stepped on Maui High's neck and never let up. The Lunas took a 27-0 lead into the half and controlled the game in the second half as almost everybody played in this one.

In addition to Ansen Cabanilla's kick-off return, notable performers from this game included (1) Jared Purdy, who tallied an interception which he returned for an apparent 85 yard touchdown (which was called back due to penalties), a touchdown reception just before the half and he helped #25 with an interception later in the game, (2) Bubba Jaramillo with a couple touchdown runs, (3) Whitehead, Brandon Kaina, Ryan Delatori and Nate Nunuha controlling the line on defense, with Nainoa Steward, Jaramillo and Purdy controlling the defensive backfield; (4) Kawika Kinimaka with some sweet passes, (5) Christian Balagso with some nice runs in the second half and (6) Amateo Flores continuing to boom great punts and kicks on special teams.

Taking photos from the sideline offers unique perspective on the game. For one, you can hear the coaches. On the following series, Maui High was threatening in Lunas' territory. Coach Kaniho anticipated that the play was going to be a pass and just before the ball was snapped, he called out to his defensive backfield to re-position themselves. Sure enough, that put #42 Jared Purdy in perfect position to make the interception near the 10 yard line! He took it to the house for an apparent pick 6, complete with escort from good friend #44 Nate Nunuha and a devastating blind side block by #32 Brandon Kaina, but the TD was called back due to penalties.
